Named “the most influential environmental organization” in an Aspen Institute poll, the Sierra Club gives the public the information and the means to make their voices heard. As the world’s oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization, the Club’s 750,000 members in 65 chapters and over 400 local groups nationwide possess the unique ability to empower people and influence public policy through community activism, public education, outreach and litigation. The North Carolina Chapter Established in 1970, the North Carolina Chapter advocates across the state and in our capitol, from the mountains to the coast, for a clean, healthy North Carolina safe for both current and future citizens. As of 2009, the Chapter has 17,000 members and 13 local groups across the state, a statewide office in downtown Raleigh, and a field office in Charlotte. In our nearly 40 year history in the state, the North Carolina Chapter has worked to pass groundbreaking environmental legislation on both the local and national level. Past issues range from putting an end to hog waste pollution to protecting the integrity of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The North Carolina Chapter also conducts activities that engage members and the general public in efforts to explore, enjoy and protect our shared environment, including outdoor hikes, service activities, community forums, and research efforts.
